Physical Plant and Clark Construction have scheduled a temporary road closure of University Avenue between Chevrolet Avenue and Dupont Street May 10-14 to connect the Learning Commons’ water main. There is no expected disruption to service during this time.
Vehicle and pedestrian detours, which are to take Chevrolet Avenue or Dupont Street around the area, are identified on the map.
Deliveries to Shipping & Receiving will be permitted through the closure at Chevrolet Ave.

The Office of International Programs will host virtual visits throughout the spring term to share information on daily life in the region, cultural experience, intercultural competencies, academics, campus and city tours, and more. The events are open to students interested in studying abroad in Germany, as well as students, staff and faculty who want to learn more about another country and culture.

The fourth event will be tomorrow, May 5 from 11 a.m. to noon. Dr. Joachim Berkemer, Cora Mathe, Holger Starzmann, Kremena Daneva and the Formula Student Team Esslingen of Esslingen University will be the presenters. They will talk about the University and city of Esslingen.

Esports to Have Summer Tryouts

The University Esports Team is taking applications for summer tryouts.

Anyone interested in playing the following games at a collegiate level, submit the corresponding tryout form. If you are interested in casting, coaching or providing analysis for any of the games, submit the game’s tryout form and indicate your interest on the form.

The coaching staff will contact you to confirm your tryout availability after your form is submitted. All tryouts will be done remotely at this time.

Ghias is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Training with the Titans, a physical fitness and nutrition business that features him as a virtual coach and trainer to clients around the world. He launched this business in 2017 soon after joining 3M as a Fluency Direct Adoption Specialist. He left 3M three years later to focus on his company full-time.
Ghias earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics from Kettering University in 2017. He since has also earned his fitness coach certification from the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers, as well as multiple awards for his performances as a bodybuilder and powerlifter.

Virtual Graphic Novel Club Meeting May 26

Honors Student Accepted into Notre Dame Doctoral Program

Honors student Pietro Pellerito (’21, Applied Mathematics) was accepted into the Economics doctoral program at Notre Dame University.

Pellerito applied to and was accepted to eight other schools, but chose Notre Dame for its collaborative environment, strong faculty and best incentives, he said.

Attending Kettering helped him realize his love of learning and research.

“I don’t think I would be here if it wasn’t for the whole University support that they gave me,” Pellerito said. “There are a bunch of people I thanked, and I’m glad I came here because it’s led me down a really great road.”

Mental Health Awareness Walk Registration Open

Registration is open for a Mental Health Awareness Walk.
The walk will be at noon, Saturday, May 22. It will begin at the Rec Center Pavilion. T-shirts are available to students, thanks to KSG and the Wellness Center.

DECA Team Wins Awards at International Conference

A team of 27 Kettering University students participated virtually in the DECA International Career Development Conference. The conference was April 13-17 with the Grand Awards Session on April 22.

More than 1,000 students from 120 colleges and universities of 26 states and Ontario, Canada competed in business and entrepreneurship events. Kettering had the largest team of students representing Michigan, and the seventh-largest collegiate DECA chapter represented at the international competition.

Fourteen Kettering students placed as finalists, while Brooklyn Crowder (’21 BA) and Andrew Gomez (’20 ME) placed third internationally in the Professional Sales category and the Emerging Technology Marketing Strategies category, respectively.

“I am extremely proud of [our students]. Team Kettering is a young team with 70 percent of the members participating at the International Conference for the first time,” said Dr. Kenneth Williams, the team’s faculty advisor. “Our students were resilient having to compete in a virtual environment. Team Kettering’s strength and outstanding performance at both the State and International levels is our academic diversity and the co-op experience. The majority of collegiate DECA chapter members are business majors. Team Kettering is comprised of business majors, as well as engineering, science, technology, and mathematics majors. Our students are able to synergize their knowledge, skills, and experiences extremely well in competition.”

Theta Xi Donates Plastic Yarn to Charity

Members of the Theta Xi fraternity collected thousands of old, plastic grocery bags and transformed them into balls of plastic yarn.

The yarn will be donated to Detroit-based charity Motor City Mitten Mission and will be crocheted into sleeping mats and pillows for the homeless in Detroit.

Weekend Power Outage Postponed

An electrical shutdown for the entire campus is scheduled for 12:01 a.m., Saturday, May 1. 

The shutdown will impact primary buildings on campus (Academic Building, Campus Center, Mott Center, Thompson Hall and the Rec Center). It will last about 10 to 12 hours. During this time, there will be limited to no lighting, no heat and no network, including wireless or phone service, which also includes voicemail. Remote access to our computing systems will remain operational during this time (Banner, Blackboard, KUCloud, etc.).

Perimeter door access will be limited to the front entrance of the Campus Center. If you must access one of the impacted areas, check in at the Campus Safety Service Center and an officer will escort you.

Einstein Bros., the Innovation Center, Harris Mobility Research Annex, Grounds Garage and Campus Village will be excluded from the outage.

College students are needed to work with middle-school-aged students in math and reading as part of the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village (SBEV) tutoring program.

The program is ongoing after school between 4 and 7 p.m, Monday through Friday.

Classroom capacities will be limited to seven to 10 people, and everyone is required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Tutors work with one to three students at a time.

All necessary materials will be provided, but you’ll need your own transportation. SBVE is located at 4119 Saginaw St. in Flint.

“Beat Burnout with The 2-Year Old’s Guide to Work-Life Balance” is the last event in the CETL Virtual Spring Speaker Series. The event, which is at 12:20 p.m., Tuesday, June 1, will feature Dr. Paul Artale.

Artale, who is the author of “The 2-Year-Old’s Guide to Work-Life Balance,” will speak about creating a positive work-life culture in your life through a blend of education, advocacy and trial. He’ll also explore how to understand different work-life strategies and adapt them to your situation.

“Engaging Gen Z Inside and Outside the Classroom Fireside Chat” will be the first event in the CETL Virtual Spring Speaker Series. Dr. Corey Seemiller is the featured speaker of the event, which is at 12:20 p.m., next Thursday, May 6.

Seemiller is the author of “Gen Z Goes to College” and other books and articles on today’s college students. She will share her insights on engaging Gen Z students in the classroom and beyond and discuss the impact of the pandemic on the collegiate experience with faculty and staff.
