The B-Section Society of Women Engineers is selling Bundtlets, personal-sized bundt cakes, from Nothing Bundt Cakes to raise money to host outreach events with local schools.

2020 & 2021 Commencement Updates

Because of relaxed outdoor gathering limitations recently announced, the following updates were announced for Commencement ceremonies at Atwood Stadium for the classes of 2020 and 2021:

  • Ticket availability is increased to six per graduate for guests.
  • The 2021 ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 19. The 2020 ceremony will remain at 9:30 a.m.
  • Health screenings at arrival are no longer required.
  • Gates open 90 minutes prior to the start of each ceremony — 8 a.m. for the 2020 ceremony and 1:30 p.m. for the 2021 ceremony.
  • Volunteers are still needed to work both ceremonies.

Updates are also sent directly to graduate candidates and posted on kettering.edu/academics/commencement.

Vaccine Clinic on Friday in Sunset Room

The University and Genesee County Public Health Department will host a vaccine clinic for students and employees from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, June 4 in the Sunset Room. First and second-dose Moderna vaccines, as well as Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccines, will be available. The second dose administration can be a follow-up from the May 7 clinic on campus or any other location as long as it’s been 28 days since your first dose.
Please bring your vaccination card and Kettering ID. No appointment necessary.

The Office of the Multicultural Student Affairs Office is virtually presenting “STEM-Based Skills and Opportunities in Health Care” at 6 p.m., next Tuesday, June 8.

Wright L. Lassiter III, President and CEO of Henry Ford Health System, will be the speaker. He oversees the $6.6 billion integrated health system comprised of five acute care hospitals, three behavioral health facilities, a regional health plan and a wide range of ambulatory, retail and other health services consisting of more than 250 locations across Michigan and 33,000 employees.

Lassiter is a strong proponent of Diversity and Inclusion and is a highly skilled executive with science and technology acumen. He received his Bachelor’s Degree with honors in Chemistry from LeMoyne College and his Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Indiana University.

Lemieux founded JJ Lemieux Consulting LLC in October 2020 to advise companies in their development of electrified vehicles and complex mechatronics. Previously, he worked at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, most recently as a Global Chief Engineer for Advanced Electrified Architectures and Controls from 2018 to 2020. He also served in senior executive roles specializing in automotive controls at IAV Automotive Engineering, GETRAG (now part of Magna International) and Ricardo.

He currently volunteers as president of the Kettering/GMI Alumni Association. Lemieux also earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1986 and a Master’s of Business Administration in 1992, both from the University of Michigan.

Kettering University and Concours d’Elegance of America have partnered to offer free tickets to students to the 42nd Annual Concours d’Elegance of America on Sunday, July 25 at the Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth.

The Concours d’Elegance of America is a prestigious automotive design and engineering competition featuring 300 historically significant vehicles.

Alumnus to Speak About Journey to Drone Industry

The Physics Club and the Kettering Aerospace and Rocketry Organization are co-sponsoring a virtual meeting from 12:25 to 1:15 p.m., this Thursday, May 27, featuring guest speaker, Dr. Jacob Crabill (’12, Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Physics).

Crabill will present “Physics Student to Drone Engineer: The Kettering Approach to an Aerospace Career.” He’ll talk about how his Kettering experience led to a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics and a career in the drone industry.

Crabill has a Ph.D. in Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Stanford University. He is the Chief Engineer for Software, Avionics and Robotics Architecture at Volansi, an on-demand aerial delivery service for time-critical shipments over long ranges. The California-based company builds and operates long-range, heavy-payload drones for commercial, defense and humanitarian applications.

An electrical shut down for the entire campus is scheduled for 12:01 a.m., Saturday, June 5 in cooperation with Hurley Hospital and Consumer’s Energy. 

The shutdown will impact primary buildings on campus (Academic Building, Campus Center, Mott Center, Thompson Hall and the Rec Center). It will last 10-12 hours. During this time, there will be limited to no lighting, no heat and no network, including wireless or phone service, which also includes voicemail.

Remote access to our computing systems will remain operational during this time (Banner, Blackboard, KUCloud, etc.).

Perimeter door access will be limited to the front entrance of the Campus Center. If you must access one of the impacted areas, check in at the Campus Safety Service Center and an officer will escort you.

Einstein Bros., the Innovation Center, Harris Mobility Research Annex, Grounds Garage and Campus Village will be excluded from the outage.

Volunteers Needed for Commencement Ceremonies

We are excited to hold live commencement ceremonies Saturday, June 19 at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. within the parameters of and in coordination with existing state and local government guidelines to honor the graduates from the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021.

Faculty members are expected to attend commencement every year. This year, faculty are expected to participate in a minimum of one ceremony and are encouraged to attend both.

Staff, your help is even more crucial to ensure our continued success of this important event. We ask for your participation, as well, and thank you in anticipation of your kind support.

Fireman’s Challenge Kicks Off Next Week

Members of Pi Kappa Alpha and the Flint Fire Department’s International Association of Firefighters Local 352 are hosting a Fireman’s Challenge fundraiser next week.

The four-day event, which features a series of challenges throughout the week, will raise money to buy a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) Bag to donate to the Flint Fire Department. The bag is used to provide clean air to trapped or downed firefighters until they can be freed.

Here is the schedule of team challenges:

  • 11 a.m., next Monday, May 24, Pool-vilion: Firehouse Tug-o-war Competition
  • 6:30 p.m., next Monday, May 24, Pool-vilion: Corn Hole Tournament
  • Noon, next Tuesday, May 25, Pool-vilion: Stair Climber Competition
  • 6:30 p.m., next Tuesday, May 25, Pike House: Scavenger Hunt
  • Noon, next Wednesday, May 26, Pool-vilion: Firehose Uncoil Competition

KARO Completes First Rocket Launch

Members of the Kettering Aerospace & Rocketry Organization (KARO) completed their first rocket launch event May 15 at Alkay Airport with local rocketry association, Michigan Team-1.

Six rockets were successfully launched up to 1,300 feet during the event. Only one rocket was lost upon its descent, said Cecilia Linck (’22, ME), group founder and president.

“Overall, it was good,” she said.

Linck started the group in Fall 2019 as a way to help students interested in aerospace skills and networking opportunities.

“Personally, I want to go into aerospace after graduation, and I thought it would be nice to start something that would give myself and future students a way to explore their aerospace interests,” she said.

She hopes the team can compete in high-powered rocket competitions in the future.

Team members constructed the rockets from kits on May 12.

“It was very rudimentary, but everyone has to start somewhere,” Linck said, “so it gives people a place to start.”

A Taste of Carriage Town Fundraiser will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 6 at 605 Garland St., Flint.

To participate, preorder a boxed lunch of chicken salad on Blueline Bread, broccoli slaw, fresh fruit, chips and a Blueline Donut at www.carriagetown.org/events.

The suggested donation is $10. Proceeds from the event go to Carriage Town Ministries to fight homelessness.

All meals must be preordered by May 31.

Adams is the former Chief Executive Officer of Adams Laboratories and Adams Therapeutics, Inc. He graduated from Heidelberg College in 1985 and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 45 years. During that time, he founded Adams Laboratories and invented Mucinex D and Mucinex DM. Adams retired in 2005 and currently owns and operates Rough Creek Lodge, a luxury resort and conference center near Dallas.

During this event, you’ll learn how to take a good idea to market.
