AutoDrive II is a four-year competition in which undergraduate and graduate students of all majors work together to concert an electric vehicle into an autonomous vehicle capable of choosing its route and driving along that route. Students develop valuable career skills, gain course credit, win trophies and set themselves up for future success while having fun in the competition.
Kettering’s team recently completed the inaugural AutoDrive Challenge and placed fifth overall. The AutoDrive II Challenge kicks off in the fall.

Take your Six Sigma skills to the next level by earning a Six Sigma Master Black Belt Certification. This six-week course from Kettering GlobalX combines two weeks of live, daily, online sessions from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and four weeks of individual project weeks with access to a mentor for continued support and guidance. The course is Sept. 20 through Oct. 31, 2021.
A free, pre-qualifying exam is required before you begin the Master Black Belt Certification. To take the exam and learn more about the courses, visit globalx.kettering.edu.

Kappa Mu Epsilon is hosting an Integral Bee math competition from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11 for students and faculty.
The event is a bracket competition of solving integrals. Participants can compete on a team or individually. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Dinner also will be provided from Taboon Middle Eastern Cuisine.

The Student Alumni Council (SAC) welcomes you to an Alumni Speaker Event with Essence Wilson ’05, at 12:30 p.m., next Wednesday, Aug. 4, in the Cowger Board Room on the second floor of the Campus Center.
Wilson is the Co-founder and Chief Strategies Officer of Communities First, Inc, a neighborhood development corporation that has invested more than $50 million in dozens of blighted buildings. Founded in 2010, Flint-based non-profit turns the blighted buildings into affordable housing for families, who are also helped with wrap-around services.
The State of Michigan recently honored Communities First with its 2021 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation following its redevelopment of Calvin Coolidge Elementary School into Coolidge Park Apartments.
Wilson earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University in 2005, after which she spent six years helping coordinate the school’s Kagle Leadership Initiative.
A boxed lunch will be provided upon the completion of this event. Seating is limited. RSVP is required and available to the first 25 students.

The School of Management (SoM) had its Celebration of Excellence event June 10, to recognize the outstanding performance of its DECA members, the memberships of the newly established Student Advisory Board, outstanding thesis in research, co-op and entrepreneurship, and the induction of new members both management honor societies, the Nu Chi Chapter of Delta Mu Delta and Sigma Alpha Chi.
Delta Mu Delta is an international honor society that recognizes academic excellence among Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs-accredited schools. To become a member, students must be a junior or senior, major in an undergraduate management program, earn a 3.7 GPA or higher and be in the 20th percentile of their college class in cumulative average grades.
The inductees are Tyler Bourassa (’23, MG), Peter Murphy (’22, BA) and Justin Seng (’21, BA ‘21).
Sigma Alpha Chi recognizes academic excellence and leadership in the School of Management, Kettering University and community. To become a member, students must be a business major or business minor with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in management courses, represent outstanding qualities of leadership, professionalism and have a commitment to service within the School of Management, Kettering University and community.

The University Baja SAE team, Kettering Motorsports, competed in the Baja SAE Validation competition and earned seventh place in the endurance category.
Kettering Motorsports, which placed 11th overall, was one of 24 teams to compete April 29 through May 2 in Arizona. The team earned 439.82 points out of 1,000 possible points.
For the Baja SAE competition, students are tasked with designing and building a single-seat, all-terrain off-road vehicle capable of enduring various rough terrains.

The Kettering University Formula SAE team finished seventh of 51 at the 2021 Formula SAE Validation Event, July 7-10 at the Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in Brooklyn.
This was the team’s best finish in the history of the program.
“It is a big deal to finish in the Top 10, as there is very strong competition, including from very large research universities with more students and funds compared to KU,” said Dr. Jennifer Bastiaan, team faculty advisor and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. “We are very happy to finish seventh, our highest-ever-result.”
For the competition, students design, build and test their own open-wheel race car, gaining valuable knowledge on project management, team collaboration and budgeting.
Discover Kettering will be Saturday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Faculty members are needed to be at the expo, which runs from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. They also are needed to be in labs from 11:50 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., for self-guided tours.

The University’s Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) team is having a celebration/informational meeting from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, in 2716AB.
The team is celebrating its rookie year accomplishments at the IGVC at Oakland University in June. Kettering was one of seven teams to compete in the Self Drive Challenge in which they adapted Army-provided software to develop an autonomous golf cart.
Team members also will give a presentation on their projects. Students interested in joining the team also can attend for more info.

A few students and employees have asked why we require everyone to use the Safe the Return to Campus cell phone app and show their “gold” screen when accessing buildings on campus and not allowing the use of the vaccination decal on the KU ID for this purpose.
Kettering University’s Professor Kristy Brinker Brouwer and Dr. Jennifer Bastiaan will be featured as part of the Safe Kids Worldwide Childhood Injury Prevention Convention, or PrevCon, the largest meeting in the world dedicated solely to the field of childhood injury prevention. The virtual event is July 12-16.
The theme of this year’s event is “Resilience” and will include top safety experts and partners from around the world to learn proven injury-prevention strategies, discover helpful resources, fuel creativity and make lasting connections.
Professor Brinker Brouwer is a featured speaker and moderator for two conference sessions: “Children and Automated Vehicles: What Do We Need to Know and Do?” and “Plenary: Children and Automated Vehicles.” Joining her at the Plenary session to discuss this emerging technology is U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Dr. Bastiaan will be spotlighted as an expert working in the AV field in this session as well.

All enrolled, degree-seeking students are required to carry health insurance coverage. Students are automatically enrolled in the insurance and must provide proof of insurance to be waived on an annual basis.
Students who have coverage through their parents or other means must provide proof of health insurance once a year through a third party, Wellfleet (formerly Consolidated Health Plans (CHP)), which verifies coverage through their online system.
Students who fail to provide proof of health insurance through the verification process will remain enrolled in the Wellfleet Student Health Insurance Plan. The University will make no exceptions.
Students and parents can contact Wellfleet at (877) 657-5030 for more information on policy coverage. The deadline for the verification process is 5 p.m., July 31. After that date, all students who have not been approved for a waiver will be responsible for the $1,358 insurance premium on their account and will have health insurance coverage from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.
