Your Wellness Wednesday Tips

Copy

A group of Kettering staff came together to consider ways they might help each of us learn some new ways to take care of ourselves. That was the genesis Wellness Wednesdays, a weekly guide to self-care.

The goal is to offer ways to promote positive and healthy self-care and a way to reduce stress in your life. Each week, an overview of the week’s activities will be provided here.

Please join all of us in supporting our Kettering values by caring for ourselves and those around us and take some time to try one or more of the options presented. If you would like to provide feedback on Wellness Wednesdays and its activities or contribute an idea, email kuonline@kettering.edu.

Actions:

  • Breathe: Continue your breathing exercises but add some relaxing music to your final set of breathing exercises. Classical tunes such as Mozart is a great choice and available on most smart devices. This is the Rule of Seven. Breathe in through your nose for seven seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds and then exhale through your mouth for seven seconds. Repeat seven times. This can help calm you down and immediately bring a sense of peace.
  • Exercise: Build to a longer walk up to 15-30 minutes this week.

View:

Other Considerations:

  • Take a 5-minute mini-break every hour: You can’t stay focused all the time. No matter how efficient you work, you’ll always get distracted, let your mind wander or end up spending time reading e-mail (and blogs) instead. One way to increase your focus is to stand up once an hour for five minutes. The change of pace and posture can make it easier to begin again and be productive.
  • Eat healthy and green food: It is tempting to order pizza, but it really pays off to take your time to cook and eat nutritious, healthy food. Not only will it help you achieve better, but it will also boost your mood! Don’t have access to a stove?  Consider something you can put together without cooking such a a small fruit salad topped with yogurt, granola and honey.

Actions:

  • Breathe: Continue your breathing exercises but add a third time during the day, maybe after lunch or dinner. This is the Rule of Seven. Breathe in through your nose for seven seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds and then exhale through your mouth for seven seconds. Repeat seven times. This can help calm you down and immediately bring a sense of peace.
  • Exercise: Exercise with some simple weight training. No weights nearby? Use cans of soup or water bottles to get started. Using the cans of soup, hold the “weights” lightly and curl your biceps eight times for each arm and then raise the weight above your head and lower to your shoulder eight times. End by pushing the weight from your chest eight times for each arm. Repeat at least four times.

Other Considerations:

  • Drink tea: Coffee will only get you that far before it sends you down into tiredness again. While still being hot and comforting, tea (and especially the herbal kind) won’t make you dehydrated and shaky. If you’re feeling tired and think you need a caffeine boost, go for cold water (or iced tea) instead. Cold water will help wake you up!
  • Listen to your favorite music: Calm music will help you calm down and upbeat music will help you up your game. Pick music that won’t distract you (like music without lyrics or in a foreign language). Your favorite music will boost your mood and keep you happy, no matter how tired you are.

Other Considerations:

  • Work on adding one more hour of sleep to your night. Sleep continues to be an important part of relieving stress and living a healthy life.
  • Consider how your diet affects your stress; consider one small change this week. Drink less soda or energy drinks or consume fewer empty calories such as candy, chips or alcohol.

Wellness Wednesday Tips Help Reduce Stress

Copy

The last year has been a challenge for many people. Isolation, loss and stress have created an experience that has been difficult for many to handle. Even those who don’t typically acknowledge high levels of stress in their lives have noted the last 18 months have been different.

The experience of stress is universal — it is part of being alive.  Therefore, developing a healthy response to stress is a skill that will serve you well throughout your life. Some stressors are within your realm of control and can be prevented.

For example, you can choose whether you want the additional stress of a fifth class, on top of your job, sports team, long-distance relationship, and so on. Other stressors are unavoidable, but you can alleviate the impact by practicing some wellness strategies.

Actions:

  • Breathe: Begin each day with a simple breathing exercise. This is the Rule of Seven. Breathe in through your nose for seven seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds and then exhale through your mouth for seven seconds. Repeat seven times. This can help calm you down and immediately bring a sense of peace.
  • Walk: Go for a short 10-minute walk by yourself, just around the block, your house or your office. Breathe deeply, pay attention to the things that surround you. Do you feel the wind, hear the birds or crickets, see green grass or flowers? Take it all in during that 10-minute walk.

View:

Other Considerations:

  • Evaluate your stress levels each day to determine if what you are doing to relieve stress is working. Use a 1-10 scoring with 10 being the highest and 1 the lowest.
  • Consider saying, “No,” to one thing this week to give yourself some extra.
