Please join all of us in supporting our Kettering values by caring for ourselves and those around us and take some time to try one or more of the options presented. If you would like to provide feedback on Wellness Wednesdays and its activities or contribute an idea, email kuonline@kettering.edu.
Actions:
  • Gratefulness Journal: End your four weeks by reading over your last three weeks of journaling and determining any themes. Consider whether this journal is worthwhile and if you should continue.

  • One Minute of Relaxation: Perfect Fall
  • Bibliotherapy: Finish reading Gratitude by Oliver Sacks, who is a neurologist who wrote “Awakenings,” which inspired the character played by Robin Williams in the movie of the same name.
Other considerations:
  • As we edge closer to Thanksgiving, consider the things you are thankful for in your life. Being thankful and being grateful is very connected. Consider ending with this article: Thankfulness and Gratitude

November is the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States. With this in mind, the next four weeks will focus on gratefulness and how it can make a positive impact on our lives, including reducing stress.

“Gratitude is an emotion that grounds us and is a great way to balance out the negative mindset that uncertainty engenders,” said Dr. Guy Winch, author of “Emotional First Aid.”

When we express gratitude, our brain releases dopamine and serotonin — two hormones that make us feel lighter and happier inside.

Actions:
  • Gratefulness Journal: Start a gratefulness journal. Use a paper journal or your phone to write down three things you are grateful for each day. This can be as simple as, “made it through another day of classes” or “I am grateful for my family and friends.” Keeping a gratefulness journal can reduce stress and help you sleep better each night. To gain insights into the benefits of keeping a gratefulness journal, click here.
  • Continue Breathing Exercises: Focused breathing every day should become a positive practice and a good habit to maintain.
View:
  • One Minute of Relaxation: Lush Spring
  • Bibliotherapy: For the next four weeks, read Gratitude by Oliver Sacks, who is a neurologist who wrote “Awakenings,” which inspired the character played by Robin Williams in the movie of the same name.
Other considerations:
  • Give Someone a Compliment: Saying something unexpected and positive to another person can have positive effects on our own well-being.
