The Women in Manufacturing (WiM) Southeast Michigan and WiM Texas are hosting a virtual book discussion from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., next Monday, March 1.

The discussion will focus on “Dare to Lead” by Brené Brown, which centers on what makes a good leader and dives into the human factors that are at the root of all good leadership.

Thursday, March 4 from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m., the Student Alumni Council (SAC) will host a live virtual SAC event, featuring Quincy Brown (‘03) as the speaker. 

In October 2020, Brown joined Continental Glass Systems as the Director of Engineering. In this role, he leads a team of engineers working to manufacture and improve a variety of structural glass systems used in architecture.

Brown previously worked at NextEra Energy Resources as a due diligence and technical valuation engineer. He earned an Associate’s Degree at Miami Dade College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University, a Master’s Degree in Finance from Florida International University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami.

Professor Speaker at Child Safety Webinar

Professor Kristy Brinker Brouwer was an invited speaker of the webinar, “Child Safety: The New Decade and Beyond.”

During the Feb. 19 event, she spoke about her role as the chairperson for the Children in Autonomous Vehicles Consortium and what her global team is doing to implement changes and awareness in autonomous vehicle development, testing and regulations, specific to the needs of children.

The event was hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine.

The next virtual Business Speaker Series event will be at 6 p.m., next Wednesday, March 3.

“Make a Difference/Build a Company/Tell a Story” will feature Dr. Bill Rayburn, Chairman of the Board, Co-Founder and CEO of MortgageTrade (mTrade).

Rayburn will discuss his experience of building companies in the financial technology (fintech) space. Prior to his current role, he co-founded and was chairman of the board at FNC and was a finance professor at the University of Mississippi. Rayburn has a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Memphis and is a chartered financial analyst.

More manufacturers are starting to use Digital Transformation, the Industrial Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence technologies and metrics to increase efficiency and productivity on their shop floors.

You can learn more about these practices from 4 to 5 p.m., this Friday, Feb. 26 during the virtual event “Industry 4.0 — Are You Ready?”

Dr. Mo Abuali, CEO and Managing Partner at the Internet of Things Company (IoTco) will speak about the principles of Digital Transformation, the Industrial Internet of Things and the Industry 4.0 initiative. Attendees also will learn about digital tools of the trade to put these practices in place, including the business case ROT, plant floor connectivity, analytics, and technology.

Abuali is a strategic and transformative technology and business management leader with a 20-year record of achievement, driving and sustaining change in manufacturing. He has a Doctorate degree in Industrial Engineering and is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Cincinnati.

Kettering Represented at Women in Engineering Event

Student, Alicia Brown (’21, IE), and alumna, Rhonda Clarke (’16, IE) are two of five panelists in “Women in Engineering: Paths to Success” from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. this Thursday, Feb. 25.

The event, presented by Brose and Square One Education Network, is aimed at inspiring women toward STEM. It is for students in sixth grade through college, as well as sixth- through 12th-grade educators.

Door prizes are available for students who attend.
