New Student Convocation on July 8; Volunteers Needed

We will be formally welcoming the incoming A-Section students into the Kettering community at New Student Convocation next Thursday, July 8, at 3:30 p.m in the Connie and Jim John Recreation Center.
This is a momentous occasion in the lives of our new students and the University that celebrates the beginning of our shared journey as teachers and learners, and we will commemorate the moment when parents witness the passage of their children into their academic lives at Kettering University.
Faculty/Staff
If you plan to walk in the procession at convocation, please RSVP. The deadline to sign up to walk is next Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Faculty and Staff who plan to walk should report with their regalia to the Recreation Center Exercise Room by 3 p.m.
Platform Party
The President, Cabinet, Deans, Department Heads, and other members of the Platform Party will assemble in the Recreation Center Sargent Alumni Lounge at 3 p.m.
Volunteers
Your help is needed to assist with greeting our guests, guiding new students and their families to the Recreation Center, and handing out programs. We have numerous opportunities for volunteers. Please email mgardulescu@kettering.edu to sign up.
Convocation volunteers will receive their assignments from the Office of Events next Wednesday, July 7. Please report to the Recreation Center lobby by 2:45 p.m next Thursday, July 8.

An electrical shut down for the entire campus is scheduled for 6 p.m., today to complete the first phase of connecting primary electric service to the Learning Commons. 

The shutdown will impact primary buildings on campus (Academic Building, Campus Center, Mott Center, Thompson Hall and the Rec Center). It will last six to eight hours. During this time, there will be limited to no lighting, no heat and no network, including wireless or phone service, which also includes voicemail.

Remote access to our computing systems will remain operational during this time (Banner, Blackboard, KUCloud, etc.).

Perimeter door access will be limited to the front entrance of the Campus Center. If you must access one of the impacted areas, check in at the Campus Safety Service Center and an officer will escort you.

Einstein Bros., the Innovation Center, Harris Mobility Research Annex, Grounds Garage and Campus Village will be excluded from the outage.

The Kettering LEADERS selected Nathan Edward Cahilig (’24, ME) as a new fellow during a virtual event June 15.

The LEADERS endowment was established in 1999 to promote leadership development and foster personal growth. Students that meet these qualities and have demonstrated a capacity for excellence are selected as fellows.

Eta Kappa Nu Initiates One New Member

The Theta Epsilon Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu initiated one new member June 15. To qualify for membership, students must be in the top 24 percent of their junior class or top 33 percent of their senior class and exhibit positive character traits.

High School Esports Virtual Summer Camp July 17

A virtual Esports camp for students in ninth through 12th grade will be from noon to 6 p.m., July 17.

This is the first year the camp has been offered. A 10% discount is available to family members of Kettering University faculty and staff members. To receive the discount, use the code, Summer2021 when you register.

Register Your Vehicle for 2021-22

All student and employee vehicles must display a 2021-22 parking permit starting July 1 to avoid ticketing.

Students must present their student ID and vehicle registration to Campus Safety officers at the main entrance of the Campus Center when they pick up their parking permits. A $50 fee is charged to student’s accounts only if they pick up their Student Paid Parking Permit.

Faculty/staff parking permits will be delivered through interoffice mail.

Be sure to review the map on the back of your vehicle parking permit to identify where you can park.

Eight Faculty Members Participate in Virtual Technology Forum with Chinese Partners

Eight faculty members participated in the Zhejiang Chanxing-Kettering University New Energy Innovation Technology Cloud Matchmaking Forum on June 11.

The following faculty members served on the expert panel and spoke about their achievements and research with alternative energy sources:

Participants from different companies spoke with Kettering faculty experts about current technological needs and difficulties they are facing. Some companies have already expressed interest to further collaborate with Kettering through sponsored projects.

The provost and deans also attended the forum to support Kettering faculty.

Kettering University and the Zhejiang Province have been partners since 2019. They have been working to advance automotive engineering, alternative energies, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Sigma Pi Sigma Inducts Three New Members

The Sigma Pi Sigma, Physics Honor Society, inducted three new members June 8, as part of the virtual B-section Physics Department Awards Event.

To be inducted, students must be a junior or senior, have an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater and 3.5 or more in their physics courses, complete four physics courses of three credits or more, have a record of active service to the physics department and be in the top 33% of their graduating class.

Only 98 students, faculty and staff have been inducted into the Kettering chapter since its founding in 2003.

Congratulations to the following inductees:

  • Nora Crampton ’21, Engineering Physics
  • Derek Keating ’22, Engineering Physics
  • Cecilia Linck ’21, Mechanical Engineering

Other awards at the event honored students with outstanding performance in introductory physics courses, service to the physics department as supplemental instruction leaders and Physics Club officers. Awards from the National Society of Physics Students also were given out.

The physics department thanks all of the students, faculty and staff for their efforts during a challenging year.

Powerlifting Showcase on Saturday

A Powerlifting Showcase will be this Saturday, June 12 in the Rec Center. Women will compete at 11 a.m. and men will compete at 2 p.m.

Participants will test their one-rep squat, bench press and/or deadlift.

Female competitors must arrive by 10:30 a.m., while male competitors must arrive by 1:30 p.m.

All interested participants must complete an entry form/waiver.

Accounts Payable Moving to Biweekly Check Runs

In a continued effort in the Business Office to strive to follow best practices, we would like to announce that effective July 2, the Accounts Payable office will move to biweekly check runs, meaning that payments will be disbursed every other week.

The schedule through the end of the calendar year is as follows:

  • July 2, 16, 30
  • August 13, 27
  • September 10, 24
  • October 8, 22
  • November 5, 19
  • December 3, 17, 23

In order to be processed in the check run, approved vendor invoices and employee/student reimbursements must be received by 3 p.m. on Tuesday of the week of the scheduled check run.  If a new vendor needs to be established, please allow an additional 2-3 business days for processing.

Additional Requests from the A/P Dept:

  • Please continue to encourage vendors to utilize our ACH payment option.
  • Please obtain all approvals prior to sending invoices to Accounts Payable for processing.
  • Please submit all A/P related paperwork to accountspayable@kettering.edu.
  • To request a purchase order, please send your information to purchasing@kettering.edu.
