Sex Trafficking Awareness, Prevention Presentation on Wednesday

The Pride Alliance is partnering with the Prism Project to provide an educational presentation on child trafficking prevention and awareness from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m., tomorrow, Dec. 1, in the Sunset Room of the Campus Center.

The Prism Project is a long-term safe house for minors who are victims of sex trafficking. They receive comprehensive care to help them heal and thrive in life after rescue.

Lunch will be provided to the first 25 students who attend.

SWE Honors Professor with Engaged Advocate Award

Dr. Diane Peters, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has been selected as one of the recipients of the Engaged Advocate award for 2022.

This honor is awarded by the Society of Women Engineers to people who contribute to the advancement or acceptance of women in engineering.

Peters will be presented with the award in March at the WE Local Conference in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Flint Symphony Orchestra will perform Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring: Suite” and Edvard Greg’s “Piano Concerto, op. 16, A Minor” at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Whiting Auditorium.

Tickets are available in the Student Affairs Office on the third floor of the Campus Center to students, faculty and staff for $5 each.

Kettering External Relations is hosting a pre-concert gathering at 6 p.m. at the Flint Institute of Music (FIM) with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, and a program discussion from FIM piano instructor Dr. Quincy Dobbs.

The Student Alumni Council (SAC) welcomes you to an Alumni Speaker Event with Shana Downs ’08 at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Cowger Board Room on the second floor of the Campus Center.
Downs is the Director of Sales and Channel Management at May Mobility, an autonomous shuttle bus developer. In her role, she is responsible for finding partners and customers to invest in the shuttles. Downs previously worked at Goodyear as a senior business development manager.
She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2008 from Kettering University, where she volunteers as a mentor, alumni admissions ambassador and head of the Kettering/GMI Alumni Association’s Student Recruitment Committee. She earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Harvard University in 2012.
A boxed lunch will be provided upon the completion of this event. RSVP is required. Seating is limited to the first 25 students.

SAE Recognizes Most Impactful Volunteers

Dr. Jennifer Bastiann (’97), Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Kettering University Board of Trustees member Carla Bailo (’83) were recognized as members of the “Top Contributor Class” of most impactful volunteers at the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) International 2021 Contributor of the Year Celebration.

Bastiann’s volunteer work with SAE includes organizing conferences, serving on a journal’s editorial board and advising multiple SAE student teams at Kettering. Bailo’s volunteer work includes speaking at conferences and authoring SAE publications.

The event was Nov. 4-7 in Tucson, Arizona.

Alpha Gamma Delta is hosting a pancake dinner and silent auction from 6 to 9 p.m., today in the Sunset Room on the second floor of the Campus Center.

The cost is $5 for 10 pancakes. Money will be used to help fight hunger and food insecurity.

Volunteers Needed for Salvation Army Bell Ringing Red Kettle Campaign

The Salvation Army has reached out to the Alumni Engagement Office to ask for volunteers to help during its annual Red Kettle Bell Ringing Campaign. The funds you help raise as a Salvation Army bell ringer will make a year-round impact in the Flint community.
This campaign will take place at the Flint Farmer’s Market, located at 300 E. First St., Flint, MI 48502, from Saturday, Nov. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 23, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
We need one to two volunteers per shift which would be from 10 a.m. to noon and from noon to 2 p.m.

Diwali Night on Thursday

The Kettering Student Government and Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers are hosting Diwali Night from 6 to 8 p.m., this Thursday, Nov. 18 in the Founders Room on the fifth floor of the Campus Center.

Diwali is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year and typically lasts five days. This year’s Diwali started Nov. 4.

Jack Stock Honored with Community Award

Jack Stock, Director of External Relations, was honored with the Gloria DeHart Community Champion Award during the Flint & Genesee Group’s Art of Achievement Awards on Nov. 4.

Stock has been with the University for more than 20 years. His work includes serving as co-chair of the University Avenue Corridor Coalition, a group of neighborhood stakeholders that addresses blight and crime spots, improve community health, stabilize land use, improve education and create partnerships to enhance the community. He also coordinates student volunteers for various community projects and events including, the CRIM Festival of Races, neighborhood cleanups and various beautification efforts.

The award, which is sponsored by Chase Bank, is given to a person or organization that worked to create a positive impact and perception of the area. It was the seventh year for the event, which is a communitywide celebration of the accomplishments that are helping move Flint and Genesee County forward.

 

Save the Dates for Co-op Evaluations

The Co-op Team will be available to conduct audits of your Co-op work term requirements and ensure your evaluations are up to date.

The audits will be available between 9:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. next Tuesday, Nov. 16, and Wednesday, Nov. 17, near the Library/d.space area in the Academic Building, at the main entrance of the Mott Building and in the Co-op Office on the fourth floor of the Campus Center.

Remember, students must have a minimum of five satisfactory Co-op terms to meet graduation requirements. At least three of those terms must take place after achieving Junior 1 status. Both a student and employee evaluation are required to receive credit.

The first 300 students to participate in a Co-op audit will receive a free care package.

A Night to Support the Prevention of Underage Drinking on Wednesday

The Wellness Center and Michigan State Police are hosting A Night to Support the Prevention of Underage Drinking from 5:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 10, in the Founders Room on the fifth floor of the Campus Center.

The event includes a brief informational presentation and demonstration stations to show students the effects of consuming alcohol including, a pedal car driving course, drunk goggles, a driving simulator and sobriety tests.

The first 50 students will receive dinner. Snacks also will be available.

The School of Management’s next Business Speaker Series: Hard Work Pays Off — Forge Your Own Path will take place from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. next Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the Sunset Room on the second floor of the Campus Center and virtually.

Featured speakers will be Nicholas Pidek ’13, co-founder/owner of Foster Coffee Co., and Ross Person ’19, financial analyst at General Motors. The pair will speak about their career paths and provide advice on how to face difficult decisions in your career.

Those who attend in person will receive lunch and will be eligible to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

The Student Alumni Council (SAC) welcomes you to an Alumni Speaker Event with Brian Falther ’11, at 12:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19, in the Cowger Board Room on the second floor of the Campus Center.
Falther is the founder and engineer at HopTera Aviation Industries. In 2015, he co-founded Bowery Farming, an indoor agriculture startup now valued at $2.3 billion. While at Bowery, Falther used sensors, robotics and LED lighting to automate and optimize natural processes, requiring less land, less water and no pesticides to grow leafy vegetables. He left Bowery Farming in 2020 and launched HopTera Aviation Industries, HopMondo Space Industries and blu5tep Records.
He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering in 2011 and studied music production at Berklee College of Music. Falther recently received the 2021 Entrepreneurial Achievement Alumni Award.
