Let the Lego Challenge begin!

The Theme is Space – The Challenge is Blast-off!

The FIRST Robotics Center at Kettering University is hosting a virtual Lego Challenge beginning May 8, 2020.

READY, SET, GO!

It’s time to research, design and create your own custom rocket, including launch pad, made of Legos.  You have two (2) weeks. Have fun; use your imagination and go a little crazy!

Prizes include:

  • Amazon gift cards – Round 1
  • Surprise gifts – Round 2
  • Free enrollment to a Kettering University Summer Online Precollege Program for winners in grades 4-6 and 7-8; and a 3D printer for grades 9-12

There are three categories:

    • Elementary (Grades 4-6) – The rocket needs to be 9–12” high including launch pad
    • Middle School (Grades 7-8) – The rocket needs to be 12–18” high including launch pad
    • High School (Grades 9-12) – The rocket needs to be 18–24” high including launch pad

How The Competition Works

Round 1: Submissions & First 15

Submit your best rocket photo between 8 a.m. May 18 and  5 p.m., May 22 (Check back during those times for access to the submission form)

For each category (Elementary, Middle School, High School), the first 15 students to submit a picture of their completed rocket, including launch pad, via the Submit Your Rocket Design tab (opens May 18) above will receive a $10 amazon gift card via email within 4-6 weeks. You may not submit early. The submission date and time will be used as qualifiers. ALL submissions will advance to Round 2: Public Voting.

Round 2: Public Voting

Voting is open from 8 a.m. May 29 through 5 p.m. June 1

Each category will be assigned a voting link. Each submission will be assigned a number (no names will be used). Voting by the public will determine the top 10 submissions for each category. The 10 students in each category receiving the most votes for their submission will advance to Round 3: Judges Interviews, as well as, receive a surprise Lego gift via mail within 4-6 weeks.

Round 3: Judges Interviews

Online Video Interviews June 1-6

The 10 students in each category who received the most votes for their submission will be scheduled for virtual interviews with Judges representing Kettering University via an online video meeting. After interviews are completed, Judges will then select the top 3 submissions from each category to move to Round 4.

Round 4: Finals Voting

Voting is open from 8 a.m. June 10 through 5 p.m. June 12

The public will once again vote to determine the winner in each category. The submission in each category with the most votes will be declared the winner for that category. The finals winner for Grades 4-6 and Grades 7-8 will receive free enrollment into one of the Kettering University Precollege summer camps offered online via Black Rocket. Note: Only Black Rocket camps offered by Kettering University will be available to the winners, valued at $149.00. The winner of the Grades 9-12 category will receive a 3D printer.
